FAQ's

Luxe Pet Studio

I am a first time client with you, what do I need for my appointment?

Welcome to The Neon Dragon! We hope to make the experience for you and your pet a great one! Firstly, please make sure you have a copy of your dog's vaccination records with you and that they are up to date. (We require Parvo, Rabies, and Distemper in order to groom your pet.) If you do not have them please simply call your clinic and ask them to email a copy of the vaccines to theneondragonltd@gmail.com

Once we have your vaccine records all you need to do is show up at your appointment time with your dog where our hosts/hostesses will do a first time assessment and ask some grooming related questions before getting started.

I have a new puppy, when should I have her groomed?

Congratulations on your new best friend! It is important to get your puppy used to grooming as soon as possible. We recommend starting with a Wing and Tail service at approximately 3-4 months old. This is the age that they should have their first set of vaccinations (Parvo, Rabies, Distemper, and sometimes Bordatella) making it safe for them to come into a multi dog environment. Don't forget to practice brushing and handling at home to make things easier on you, your pet, and your stylist :)

How long will the groom take?

Time is dependent on the size of the dog, condition of coat, and behavior during groom. It is best for your dog's experience not to rush through the grooming process so please be prepared for a 2-4 hour wait. At the time of drop off we can give you a more accurate wait time estimate. Rest assured we are working as quickly and as safely possible!

Should I stay during the groom?

We know how much you care for your pet and want the best for them and so do we! That is why it is best to let an experienced stylist work one on one with your pet alone. This way we can bond with your dog and have their full attention making the grooming process much safer.

My dog is matted, do you dematt?

We believe the best way to keep a dog matt free is by prevention! Although we do dematt to some degree we believe that if the coat is too matted it is kinder to go shorter rather than dematting. But don't worry! Our stylists can show you the proper brushing techniques and get your dog on a regular grooming schedule to help keep them in a fuller coat.

How often should my dog be groomed?

This will depend on the length of coat you'd like to keep your dog in. For a longer coat we generally recommend either a bath and tidy or full groom every 4 -6 weeks while still brushing at home. Our certified team of stylists can give you a better idea of how often your dog should be groomed once we asses their coat.

Will you kennel my pet before/after the groom?

For the safety of all dogs in our care we do keep them in kennels while they wait. The Neon Dragon has large dog runs for those that need a bit more space. If your dog does not do well in a kennel please let us know before the appointment so that we can work out a way to limit kennel time.

Doodle FAQs

How often does my doodle have to be groomed?

We recommend a professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. Daily brushing is essential. It is strongly suggested to come in for a bath and tidy every two weeks if you keep your doodle in full-length coat.

If I like my doodle kept shorter, will I have to get them groomed as often?

We still recommend grooming every 4 to 6 weeks but you could do weekly brushing instead of daily brushing. If you were doing a shave down grooming every 4 to 6 weeks, you wouldn’t need a bath and tidy every two weeks in between your full groom appointments. You must comb every inch of the dog down to the skin if you are not going to bring in for professional grooming every 4-6 weeks.

What is the big deal about bringing in every 4-6 weeks??

Matting. Doodles are notorious for getting matted. Breeders are known to tell owners that they don’t need to get them groomed until they are one year old. This is the biggest misconception they could tell owners. Doodles need to be introduced to their groomer as early as possible since this is a huge part of their life. Typically your veterinarian will recommend your puppy is safe to be groomed and introduced into a multi dog environment after their 2nd set of vaccines(around 4 months old). Before then we recommend daily brushing and handling at home to get your puppy used to what we will be doing for their 1st groom. After which, they will need to be groomed every 4 to 6 weeks. If in full coat, a bath and brush out every two weeks. A matted doodle is a doodle in pain. It absolutely breaks our hearts every time we have to shave a matted dog. It is not funny, it is not anything we take lightly. It’s not fun for the dog and it’s not fun for us. Do not cause harm to your pet. Let’s make your beloved pet’s experience a positive one together!

What is Coat change?

This is the transition the coat makes from puppy-hood to adult hood. As a puppy the dog does not have an undercoat. It has a soft, velvet coat. As your puppy matures, it grows an undercoat which is what protects the dog from pests, & the elements. Because doodles are a cross between various different types of double coated breeds, what texture this coat may yield can be unpredictable. It can vary from velvety soft & fluffy, to very dense and thick. Typical doodle coats come in either curly poodle type textures or more wiry and straight.

Why does my doodle look different after grooming? I like them curly.

We comb out every inch of your dog’s coat with a fine tooth comb. This makes the coat appear straighter than you’re used to seeing. It’s very important to make the coat as straight as possible when grooming so that we can give your dog the most even cut. We’ve also bathed and conditioned your dog’s coat and hand blow dried it to the point that it’s 100% dry. This also helps to prevent any hot spots from damp coat to form. Once it’s dry we cut the dead ends off the coat so it’s been professionally styled all by hand. No worries though!! To get the cute curls back, you just need to get the coat a little bit damp again or wait a few days and they will come back. We need to get the coat in this state in order to do the most professional pristine haircut possible. (The same way your hairstylist would!)

Are doodles hypoallergenic?

Unfortunately, no. This is a myth. The poodle is considered hypoallergenic. Some breeds that make up doodles are the golden retriever, Bernese Mountain dog, and Labrador Retriever; all of which are not hypoallergenic. Although adorable, Doodles all shed and can have all various different coat textures because of the various mixtures of these breeds. If you are looking for a hypoallergenic dog, a couple examples would be any of the poodles, or Bedlington terriers.
